Switchfoot was formed in San Diego, California in 1996 by brothers Jon and Tim Foreman. Originally called Chin Up, the band was a trio with Chad Butler playing drums.


Signed to Atlantic Records, the band's music is distributed to the Christian market by Sparrow Records.

  • The band has played on shows like Jimmy Kimmel, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon and their music has been heard on the TV shows Hawaii 5-0, Grey’s Anatomy and One Tree Hill as well as in the movie, A Walk to Remember.

  • - Switchfoot was featured on the June 2006 cover of CCM Magazine, after turning down the opportunity for years.

  • - In 2003, during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Tim Foreman said, "We're Christian by faith, not genre," when asked about the "Christian band" label.

  • - After just 20 gigs, they signed with re:Think records and released their first album in 1997.

  • - The band name comes from a surfing term meaning to shift your feet on the board to take a new stance facing the opposite direction.
