Oscar-Winning Actress Diane Keaton, Raised in the Methodist Faith, Dies at 79

Academy Award-winning actress and beloved Hollywood icon Diane Keaton has passed away in California at the age of 79.
Keaton, whose career spanned more than five decades, was celebrated for her singular charm, wit, and authenticity both on and off the screen. She rose to prominence with her portrayal of Kay Adams in The Godfather trilogy and achieved international acclaim for her Oscar-winning performance in Annie Hall (1977). Known for her trademark style-wide-brimmed hats, tailored suits, and unapologetic individuality-Keaton became one of the most enduring and influential figures in American cinema.
Her filmography also includes Baby Boom, Father of the Bride, Something's Gotta Give, and The First Wives Club, showcasing her versatility across drama and comedy alike. Beyond acting, Keaton was a director, producer, author, and passionate advocate for architecture, design, and historic preservation.
Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles on January 5, 1946, Keaton was raised in a Free Methodist household, where her mother instilled in her a deep sense of creativity and independence. In later years, she described herself as agnostic, often reflecting thoughtfully on questions of faith, spirituality, and meaning in interviews. Though she distanced herself from organized religion, Keaton spoke openly about her gratitude for life's mysteries and her belief in love, kindness, and art as sacred expressions of the human spirit.
Her legacy will be remembered not only through her unforgettable performances but also through her authenticity and her fearless embrace of individuality-qualities that inspired generations of actors and fans around the world.
Keaton is survived by her two children, Dexter and Duke.
Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
