Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin’s Faith-Based Film “Ruth & Boaz” Sets Global Netflix Premiere for Sept. 26

Netflix, Tyler Perry Studios, and DeVon Franklin today announced the global premiere of Ruth & Boaz, a modern retelling of one of the Bible's most beloved love stories, set to debut September 26, 2025, exclusively on Netflix. The film marks the first project in a multi-year, multi-picture creative partnership between Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin, focused on uplifting, faith-centered storytelling for a worldwide audience.
Directed by Alanna Brown (Trees of Peace) and written by Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar) and Cory Tynan (Play'd), Ruth & Boaz reimagines the timeless tale through the lens of contemporary Southern Black life. The story follows Ruth Moably, portrayed by Serayah McNeill (Empire, Kingdom Business), a rising hip-hop artist who steps away from the Atlanta music scene after a tragic loss. She moves to rural Tennessee to care for her late boyfriend's grieving mother, Naomi, played by the legendary Phylicia Rashad (The Gilded Age). There, Ruth finds unexpected healing, community, and a slow-burning romance with Bo "Boaz" Astra, brought to life by Tyler Lepley (Harlem, P-Valley).
The film boasts a powerhouse ensemble cast, including Walnette Santiago (Doom Patrol, BMF), Nijah Brenea (Kold x Windy), James Lee Thomas (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), and a roster of music industry icons in memorable cameos: Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, Jermaine Dupri, Lecrae, and Yung Joc. Lecrae, the Grammy-winning hip-hop artist, appears in a supporting role as "Sauce," adding to the film's unique blend of Hollywood and music star power.
Produced by Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin, with executive producers Angi Bones, Tony Strickland, and Bart Lipton, Ruth & Boaz is a heartfelt exploration of faith, family, and second chances, set against the lush backdrop of the American South. The film's runtime is 1 hour and 31 minutes.
"In a world that feels more divided than ever, we're focused on telling stories that uplift and bring people together-and Netflix is the perfect home for that," said Tyler Perry. DeVon Franklin added, "Tyler and I have been great friends for over 15 years. When he called me to partner on movies that inspire and uplift, it was a no-brainer. Ruth & Boaz is just the beginning."
Netflix's Vice President of Film, Niija Kuykendall, praised the collaboration, calling it a reflection of the platform's commitment to diverse, inspirational storytelling for a global audience.
The first official clip from Ruth & Boaz offers a glimpse into the film's soulful romance and emotional depth, described as "The Notebook meets The Clark Sisters". Fans can look forward to a story filled with music, heart, healing, and the redemptive power of love when Ruth & Boaz premieres worldwide on Netflix this September
