Trace Adkins Explains Why He Signed Up for 'I Can Only Imagine'

Country music singer Trace Adkins has recently joined the cast of the new Christian movie I Can Only Imagine. The movie hit a high note at the domestic box office during its opening weekend, bringing in $17.1 million.
Variety notes that "I Can Only Imagine" "crushed" early box office forecasts with its surprisingly strong opening at 1,629 North American locations. Opening-weekend estimates had been in the $2 million to $8 million range.
Trace Adkins spoke with CBN's Studio 5 about his role in the film. The singer plays Scott Brickell, Millard's agent. After reading the script for "I Can Only Imagine" he says he was "blown away by the whole story."
"It's all about hope and redemption," Adkins said. "That's what Andy Erwin, one of the co-directors of the movie, told me. He said this is a story about redemption, and I said, 'Sign me up. I could use a dose of it.'"
"That should be the takeaway from this film - that nobody is beyond hope, nobody is beyond redemption."
"I Can Only Imagine" tells the story behind the multiplatinum song of the same name, which found an audience with both pop and Christian fans everywhere, selling millions of copies worldwide and reaching the top of the Billboard Top 200 singles chart.
Based on the true story of lead singer Bart Millard and the popular contemporary Christian band MercyMe, which was formed in Edmond, the film was written by Jon Erwin and Brent McCorkle.
