Dying Joey Feek Tells of When She Fell in Love with Rory
One of the most endearing love stories is that of Joey + Rory Feek. The couple have been married for 13 years and through his blog we often get a glimpse of how Rory feels about his wife Joey. Joey is currently suffering from terminal cervical cancer. She has stopped all treatment and is preparing for her final days. Rory has never for a second given up on her. Rather, his undying love has always been paramount.
In a recent interview with People, we get to hear the story from Joey this time. She tells the magazine how she first met Rory. "Rory was singing 'In the Round' at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville with three other songwriters,"Joey told the mag about the first time she ever saw Rory. "I was just one of dozens of people in the audience that night. From the first song Rory sang, I fell head over heels for him. I didn't even know him, but something inside me said, 'You're going to marry that man and spend the rest of your lives together.'"
The couple married just two months later, and the rest is history. They formed a country music duo Joey + Rory. Joey is the duo's lead vocalist, while Rory sings background vocals and plays guitar. The duo was the third-place finalist on CMT's competition Can You Duet in 2008. That same year, Joey + Rory signed to Sugar Hill/Vanguard Records, releasing their debut album The Life of a Song in late October. This album's lead-off single, "Cheater, Cheater", was a Top 40 hit on the Billboard country charts. Although none of their other singles made top 40 on that chart, the duo released six studio albums in total.
And in February 2014, they welcomed beautiful baby girl, Indiana. Rory has two daughters from a previous relationship, Heidi, 29, and Hopie, 27.
Rory said: "For better or worse aren't just words you say anymore. Because of all Joey is going through, it's given me the opportunity to live them every day, and follow through and mean the words I said to her at the altar."
On February 12th, Joey+Rory are releasing Hymns That Are Important to Us (Gaither Music Group). The album is now available for pre-sale.
"I refer to [this] as Joey's album--the one she's always wanted to make-filled with the hymns she grew up singing," described Rory. "It was early in the spring when we started talking about the record...we began recording it in a studio in Nashville early in the summer, just after recovering from her first big surgery in Chicago. She championed it...and even with all she's gone through there might have been a few things that changed, but that record was not gonna stop....
"So we recorded in between some of her treatments after the surgery. Sometimes in the evenings I would get out a microphone, and my wife sang the vocals in our hotel room in Atlanta because she wanted to see this record happen. She did her vocals where she could--in hotel rooms, at our house, wherever and whenever she felt up to singing."
