Michael Keaton Redeems Himself On Birdman
Birdman - the movie title itself could possibly be another superhero click. But is it? Nothing close to a superhero movie. In this movie, we don't see any sci-fi opening scenes, and any display of super human abilities. Instead, in the opening credits, we see Michael Keaton (the protagonist) sitting cross-legged in a Broadway dressing room that already appears to be shabby. In this scene, Keaton is wearing nothing but plain white briefs. Though it is obvious that the movie is not fantasy based, the story of the movie itself will remind us of how powerful the human spirit truly is.
Meet Riggan Thomson, the former action star
The movie revolves around the character of Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton), an action movie star who used to be popular. Now, he is uneasy with the setbacks that he is experiencing. The once celebrated star has now lost his glimmering light and has to get by with the smaller stage shows in Broadway. Though he is not popular anymore, Thomson is quite determined to prove his worth in the acting industry. He is still keen on producing, directing and even starring in his own Broadway stage shows. Birdman has been shot in St. James Theatre, considered to be one of the legendary houses of Broadway. Most of the scenes in Birdman is continuously shot, as the camera keeps on moving from what's going on to the dressing rooms to the stage, wings, and the front-of-house. However, the movie does not exude the feel of being rushed.
The people around Riggan Thomson
Skeptics, that's how the people around Riggan's life will be. This may seem quite sad, but it is the reality that Riggan has to face. Most of the people around him are convincing him to stop performing and to just find a different career path, one that will be more beneficial to him. Despite all the discouraging people around him, Riggan simply won't give up. A younger star, Mike Shine (Edward Norton) will spice things up as he tries not just to mess things up with Riggan, but also seduce his daughter Sam (Emma Stone). Sam just got released from the rehab and is still quite vulnerable to being emotionally displaced again. What we need to really watch out for in Birdman is how Riggan will be able to beat the odds.
