Facebook Messenger App Privacy Issues: Still No Way Out
Facebook Messenger App Privacy Issues: Still No Way Out
With Facebook usage reaching a threshold and investors pushing for better returns, Mark Zuckerberg has to come up with new ideas to keep things interesting for his social networking platform. Although it is true that users have loved Facebook since its inception, lately, Facebook has done a lot of things that have irked the fans and critics alike.
In late April this year, Facebook decided to split its messaging service into another application for smartphone users. This means downloading and managing a separate app as messaging service no longer worked with regular Facebook app. While some may see it as a step forward towards changing interactions with friends and family, most do not want such hassles. It is more like forcing the users to use the messaging service rather than politely asking to test another app.
Additionally, Android and iOS forums were soon flocked with complaints especially with bugs, security, and other privacy issues. The messenger app asks for permission to access, make calls and send messages. It even needs to get to the camera files and GPS, which has made users rethink if they really want to use the Facebook messenger. Facebook developers explained that the application just needs access to help users share pictures and location. However, they have not really explained anything about the call and messaging permissions.
Many publication houses including Huffington Post and Daily Mail have raised users' concerns about the privacy setting and how it can be solved. The user reviews on App Store remain to be dull with people asking all sorts of question. On the other hand, they cannot really do anything about the app split and have to download it if they want to use the Facebook messenger.
Interestingly, while many are talking about how Facebook has compromised with the security of their devices, not many believe that other applications also ask for similar permissions. Whether it is just related to the popularity of Facebook or users' obsession of asking questions with all of its move, it's not clear. The good news is that Facebook Messenger application cannot initiate these processes on its own, unless the users asks for it.
So if you're worried about your security and privacy, better use other messenging app to connect with your friends, or just use Facebook's web based application, which still allows users to use the messenger without all the fuss.
