iOS 8 Update for iPhone 4S Without iTunes: Space Issues Resolved
Most of the Apple users do not really have enough time to sit with their computers and wait for iTunes to complete the transition from iOS 7 to iOS 8. That is probably the only reason why help forums are loaded with questions on how to update iPhone 4S without iTunes.
Why is that exactly a problem in the first place? Apparently, the device asks users to free up storage space for around 5 gigabytes for the update. Although iOS 8 will not consume that much storage once it is installed, users need it initially nevertheless. However, when connected with iTunes through a computer, this new operating system update requires only 1 GB space. The best way to deal with this situation is to remove as much junk as possible. Of course, there is a lot of data, but you can choose to keep what's important.
Apple suggests that you connect the phone to computer and take a fresh backup for iPhone 4S and especially for the 8 GB version. Now delete what's not required to free up space. This includes the applications, mails, Safari cache and other data, songs, and other similar stuff. If possible, use a third party application of get rid of junk in no time.
Unfortunately, some users face problem even after deleting all of their songs and pictures. What's eating up the space then? For iPhone 4S, many things eat a large chunk of the space and factory reset is the only way to make it happen. Delete all content and then proceed with the update. Don't worry, you can update the important settings for the phone with the help of iTunes later. Just connect through WiFi, install and update.
As for the problems after update, it is better to keep your phone free from unwanted data and applications. The battery drain and laggy performance issues are primarily due to new iOS and inability to understand how it actually works. Of course, Apple will release new updates and patches to fix common issues soon but by that time, you have to make most of available resources.
