Black Widow Movie Rumors: A Black Widow Movie Just Might See Daylight
A Black Widow movie in the near future? Why not?
There is a belief among the who's-who in Hollywood that female movies do not make money. This is one of the strongest reasons why we never get to see a lot of solo female superhero films, whether from Marvel or DC. In cases when a female superhero is featured, these movies do not really do well in ticket sales and viewership. .Among the greatest examples that can be cited are the movies Elektra and Aeon Flux.
Both movies are based on big hit comic characters and played by big names like Jennifer garner and Charlize Theron. Despite the hot actresses, both movies still flopped. This does not mean that this trend will stay this way forever. There is actually a growing change of preferences among movie viewers over the years. People are now increasingly interested in women-centered movies, no matter if it's an action flick or a drama. The slew of young adult dystopian movies featuring girls who can kick ass such as Katniss Everdeen of Hunger Games, Bella Swan of Twilight, and even Tris Prior of Divergent prove this. TIcket sales for these movies are quite high. Of course, they are of different league of superheroes, but this still proves tough women are being appreciated now.
It should also be noted that there are some very valid reasons why Elektra and Aeon Flux failed in the first place. The fact that these movies featured women superheroes is not entirely the reason. The movies mentioned were both beset by negative reviews and poor marketing.
That said, if Marvel is thinking of putting out a movie featuring Black Widow as the main protagonist, this movie can possibly be a big success.
This is not lost to Marvel President Kevin Feige, who hinted that they are toying on the idea of making a solo movie for Scarlet Johansson and her Black Widow character. The people in the studio are now seeing the significance Black Widow as well as the character's development in the movies.
Although this is still unofficial, the sun is beginning to shine on our hope of seeing a solo Black Widow movie!
