The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Last Installment of Trilogy Showing in December 2014 News Updates and More
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is the third and final installment in the film adaptation based on the book written by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Hobbit.
The epic fantasy adventure trilogy was originally envisioned as a two-part film. The first two installments, An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation of Smaug, were released in 2012 and 2013 respectively. It was only on 30 July 2012 when Peter Jackson, the director of first two films, confirmed plans of releasing a third installment, turning The Hobbit adaptation into a trilogy. This last and final film story line is written by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies stars Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, and Orlando Bloom.
With the original title 'There and Back Again' in 2012, Jackson stated his thoughts about the last installment's title changes on his Facebook page, "There and Back Again felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo's arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced-after all, Bilbo has already arrived "there" in the Desolation of Smaug." This decision was supported by the chairman of The Tolkien Society, Shaun Gunner, saying that, "'The Battle of the Five Armies' much better captures the focus of the film but also more accurately channels the essence of the story."
The first teaser trailer was initially released at the San Diego Comic Con on July 26, 2014. The Battle of the Five Armies is scheduled to be released on December 12, 2014 in the United Kingdom and December 17, 2014 in the United States.
