Sin City 2 Release, Latest News: Opened August 22, Lacks the Same Brutal Impact as Original Sin City, Critics Say
Sin City 2, now officially entitled Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, opened in the theater on August 22, 2014. Robert Rodriguez once more co-directed the film with "Sin City" creator Frank Miller.
Original cast members Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, and Powers Booth returned to reprise their old roles in the first movie. Newcomers to the Sin City film franchise include Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Jaime Chung, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Heysbert, Marton Csokas, Julia Garner, Juno Temple, Ray Liotta, Stacey Keach, Christopher Meloni, Lady Gaga, Jeremy Piven, and Crystal McCahill. Eva Green will be playing "Ava", the "Dame" in the movie title.
According to Miller, the movie is primarily be an adaptation of his book "A Dame to Kill For." It also features his short story "Just Another Saturday Night" along with two new original stories - "The Long Bad Night" and "The Fat Loss." As with the first "Sin City" movie, the new film adaptation of his graphic novels maintained a multi-storyline structure. It is both a prequel and a sequel to the stories shown in the first "Sin City" movie. For instance, the story of "A Dame to Kill For" is set years before "The Big Fat Kill" events happened. On the other hand, "The Fat Loss" takes place after "John Hartigan's" suicide in the earlier shown "That Yellow Bastard."
As spoilers for those who haven't watched, in "The Fat Loss" segment of the story, Jessica Alba will reprise her role as "Nancy Callahan," the stripper. However, this time around, she's decided won't be a victim anymore. She's decided she'll go crazy. According to Rodriguez, "You see a little girl in that first film. By the end of this (second film), she's the avenging angel."
Sin City 2 opened with only $6.48 million this weekend, a fraction of what the first film earned according to Comic Book Movie so "don't expect a third Sin City movie anytime soon." Rotten Tomatoes' critics' consensus summary says, "A Dame to Kill For boasts the same stylish violence and striking visual palette as the original Sin City, but lacks its predecessor's brutal impact."
