Jupiter Ascending Release Date, Latest News: Reset to February 6, 2015, for More Special Effects Works
Originally scheduled for theater screening on July 18 this year, the movie's release date was moved back to February 6, 2015. According to Hollywood Reporter's insider sources, the schedule reset was made because the film still needed more special effects work. According to Variety, the decision "was prompted by weak response to a research screening in late April and the fact that the visual effects, on which the futuristic thriller heavily relies, were incomplete."
Warner Bros.' domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman told Variety that the Wachowskis needed more time to complete their work on more than 2,000 special effects shots in the film. He said, "With the July release date, they were just not going to make it on time. A lot of the issue for us was getting it ready for the international release, since the foreign territories need additional time."
Warner Bros. and Australia's Village Roadshow Pictures co-financed Jupiter Ascending, a $150 million project. Warner will pay over $100 million for the worldwide marketing of the movie while the remainder will be covered by Village Roadshow.
Jupiter Ascending is written, produced and directed by The Wachowskis, the brother-and-sister team of Andy and Lana Wachowski of The Matrix trilogy and V for Vendetta fame. The forthcoming sci-fi flick tells the story of Jupiter Jones (played by Mila Kunis), a lowly, unlucky Chicago cleaning lady who learns that she's been pre-destined to become Queen of the Universe.
Aside from Kunis, others in the cast include Channing Tatum, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Boothe, Tuppence Middleton, Bae Doona, James D'Arcy, Tim Pigott-Smith, David Ajala, Charlot Beaumont, Terry Gilliam, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sarah Campbell, Kick Gurry, Edward Hogg, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Luke Neal.
Tatum, who in the film plays 'Caine Wise,' a genetically modified alien warrior, was at the recent San Diego Comic-Con to promote Jupiter Ascending. There he told the audience at a panel discussion that The Wachowskis are "absolutely out of their minds. We really try to do something different, something you've never seen before. It's not a book or a comic, so we tried to push it." He unveiled a teaser trailer showing just what he meant.
