Lee Greenwood Reflects on Honoring Charlie Kirk at Memorial Service with “God Bless The USA”

Lee Greenwood

Legendary country artist Lee Greenwood shared heartfelt reflections after performing his iconic song, "God Bless The USA," at the memorial service for Charlie Kirk, the young man tragically taken by an assassin's bullet. Greenwood described the performance as both "tribute and eulogy" to a life cut short but lived with great faith and conviction.

"As a Christian, my prayer has always echoed Isaiah 6:8: 'Here am I; send me,'" Greenwood said. "I was deeply moved to learn that Kirk had carried this same prayer in his own heart. To be able to honor him in this way was both humbling and profoundly meaningful."

First released in 1984, "God Bless The USA" was written during a time of national uncertainty, as Greenwood sought to pen a message of faith, unity, and American pride. The song quickly became his signature anthem and has since reemerged as a unifying voice through pivotal moments in U.S. history, from Desert Storm to the aftermath of September 11th. Its enduring message of gratitude and hope has made it one of the most recognized and beloved patriotic songs of all time.

A poignant moment at the service, captured by photographer Courtney Reed, shows Greenwood immediately after his performance as President Donald J. Trump prepared to take the stage. Greenwood reflected on the image, noting how it represented the former president's compassion:

"To me, the photo reflects his humanity and deep care for those around him. On such a difficult day, bearing the weight of offering his own words, President Trump still paused to extend kindness and gratitude to me," Greenwood shared. "I am humbled to serve-and never prouder of President Donald J. Trump."

Greenwood's performance of "God Bless The USA" at Kirk's memorial continues the song's legacy as both a comfort in grief and a reminder of shared faith and values.
