"The Conjuring" can definitely be called the horror movie hit of 2013. The R-rated film directed by James Wan multiplied its $20 million budget over six times with its phenomenal box office performance. Its success was undoubtedly due to its throwback use of retro horror movie tactics, as well as Wan's camera and production expertise.
Even before "The Conjuring" became such as evident box office success, New Line Cinema gave the okay for a sequel to be developed. The film focuses on the story of Ed and Lorraine Warren, and it is based very loosely on the real-life couple of the same names. The two were paranormal investigators and professional demonologists, primarily in the seventies. The Warrens are portrayed by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in the film.
Although many fans were excited at the prospect of the sequel focusing on the Amityville Horror case (which was actually investigated by the Warren team), this will not be the focus of the second film in the saga. Rather, a source close to the Warrens had this to say about the basis for the plot of the sequel to "The Conjuring:" "The case file they're looking at [occurs] in the late '70s and centers on two sisters in Enfield, England, who were allegedly possessed. Warren said she personally saw them levitate and even saw one of the sister dematerialize in front of her only to be found 20 minutes later stuffed into an oversized fuse box, contorted in such an unnatural way that they couldn't have replicated it if they tried. She also said that the demon spoke directly to her husband on many occasions. Warren cited this case as one of the most terrifying experiences of her career."
If this is indeed the basis for the sequel's plot, fans are in for a spooky treat. "The Conjuring 2" will be released in theaters on October 23, 2015.
