Amy Grant Celebrates the 30th Anniversary of "Heart in Motion" This Month

This month marks the 30th anniversary since the release of Amy Grant's career record Heart in Motion. Though Grant was already a mainstay in the Christian charts before the release of Heart in Motion, it was this album that put her on the pop charts, making her a household name.
Grant remembers the album with fondess. "It feels like two things at one time. It feels like I could blink and I'm right back there. And then it also feels like: 'Who is that?' (laughs) I'm twice the age I was then. I enjoyed-especially during that stretch-being part of such an incredible massive team. I wasn't even aware of how big it was, and everybody doing their part. I had young kids and I was trying to enjoy every moment."
The album was released on March 5th, 1991. It went on to chart at #10 on Billboard's 200 and #1 on the Christian album chart, holding on to the pole position for an amazing 32 weeks. By the end of 1997, the album sold 5 million copies alone. It became the best selling Christian album in Billboard history.
The album features 4 big hits, including "Baby Baby." Inspired by Grant's new baby then Millie, "Baby Baby" went all the way to #1 on both the pop as well as the AC chart. "Every Heartbeat," "That's What Love is For" and "Good For Me" continue grant's streak of top 10 successes. However, Grant did not abandon her Christian base. "Hope Set High" became a Christian radio favorite.

Some critics have accused Grant of selling out on her faith then. Heart in Motion came on the heels of Grant's heavily Christian-themed album Lead Me On. Though Grant has covered a broader spectrum of issues in her latter album, there are songs that speak of her faith. The aforementioned ballad "Hope Set High" repeatedly acknowledges God's goodness with the phrase "When it all comes down, if there's anything good that happens in life, it's from Jesus." Moreover, the often overlooked "Ask Me" describes how a woman's faith helps her to heal from child sexual abuse.
Be on the look out for a re-released edition of Heart in Motion coming later in the spring with bonus material.
