Story Behind Brian Parker's "Your Eyes Make a Mirror"
Worship leader and songwriter Brian Parker has released his fourth single with Homegrown Worship, "Your Eyes Make a Mirror." This song is dedicated to those who constantly battle with insecurity and self image issues.
Parker shares the inspiration and meaning behind the song: "Who's eyes make a WHAT? Identity is everything! That got me thinking of a metaphor where I saw God's eyes as a mirror and the closer I got the more I could see my reflection. Jesus reflected the fullness of God, and in this song I wanted those struggling with self worth and identity to choose God as their mirror and say: "I want my reflection to be Your image, God, through me!"
As I get older I'm puzzled why I still feel the need to keep up my image, my charm or prove to others that I'm worthy. Insecurity is a huge issue today where people hide from mirrors because they do not like what they see. A lot of people dream of being someone else and scroll through social media wishing they were like others. This can only lead to low self esteem, anxiety and depression. To get out of that trap, in this song I focus on the eyes of the One who knows. The One who looked compassionately at Peter when he denied Jesus 3 times. The One who looks at us like the father who ran to his returning prodigal son. I want nothing else but to see myself through the lens of the perfect One who saw me before I was even born.
The world needs a reminder that we are made in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27) "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
For Christians it says in 2 Corinthians 3:18: that: "...we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit."
I'm anticipating the day when I can see Jesus face to Face, where I will fully know Him just as I am fully known. For the time being, we look through a dim and dusty mirror as it illustrates in 1 Corinthians 13:12:
"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known."
