Kanye West's 'Jesus Is King' Becomes His Ninth Consecutive No. 1 Album
Kanye West's gospel-inspired album Jesus is King has hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts. This is the rapper's ninth consecutive album to debut at No. 1. West is now tied with Eminem for the most consecutive No. 1's on the Billboard 200 charts, says Billboard. The album also topped Billboard's Gospel Album and Christian Album Charts.
The set opens atop the all-genre ranking with 264,000 equivalent units. Of that sum, 109,000 are pure sales. The album also boasts the second largest sales week of the year for an R&B/Hip-Hop album, selling more than 100,000 copies, second only to Post Malone's album "Hollywood's Bleeding."
The rapper first conquered the tally in 2005 with his sophomore title Late Registration, and he reached the highest spot with all of his subsequent titles on his own: Graduation (2007), 808s & Heartbreak (2008), My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010), Yeezus (2013), The Life of Pablo (2016) and most recently, Ye (2018). As one-half of Watch The Throne with Jay-Z, he nabbed another chart-topper with the duo's self-titled debut, which owned the list in 2011.
West shows no signs of ceasing to releasing Gospel-inspired albums. In a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music's Beats 1, West announced that he plans to release an album titled "Jesus Is Born" on Christmas Day."I believe because God has given me a gift that I pray for and so many people love," West told Lowe, "that if I stop doing it, he might start to take all the things away."
