2014 INDIANAPOLIS 500 Ends with Amazing Finish for Hunter-Reay
It was a beautiful, sunny warm day in Indianapolis as 33 drivers prepared to get into their racing machines and take part in "the greatest spectacle in racing", at the fabled Indianapolis 500 motor race in Indianapolis, Indiana. As the 400,000 racing fans took to their seats, a myriad of colorful balloons were released filling the bright clear blue skies overhead, and there was electricity and excitement in the air as the memorable words were uttered, "Gentlemen, start your engines"! It wasn't long before the Pace Car lead the procession of cars around the track for several laps as the drivers found their racing positions and awaited the waving of the green flag to signal the start of this world classic race.
This year's Indy 500 did not see as many accidents as races in the past which allowed the drivers a much more competitive race. Every race fan longs for the opportunity to view a race where there is an exciting finish. And, this year's Indy 500, proved to be one of those races that provided an unforgettable finish. As the race was nearing the finish, it came down to two drivers battling for the checkered flag--Helio Castroneves and Ryan Hunter-Reay. Castroneves had already won the 500 race three times and was trying for his 4th victory at the fabled Brickyard in Indianapolis. Hunter-Reay was seeking his 1st win at Indy after losing the lead in 2013 with only three laps to go.
This would be Hunter-Reay's year of destiny, however! On the final lap of the race Hunter-Reay passed Castroneves to take the checkered flag and win the Indianapolis 500! Hunter-Reay was the first American driver to win the Indy 500 since 2006. Following the race, Hunter-Reay led his racing team to the iconic section of bricks on the racetrack where they all kneeled down and kissed this historic section of the track. This race proved to be one of the best on record, as Hunter-Reay narrowly beat Castroneves to the finish line by .06 seconds!
