The Voice's Kat Perkins Honors the Late Christina Grimmie with New Single "Angels"

When Kat Perkins was a contestant on the Voice, she struck up a friendship with the late Christina Grimmie. Upon hearing Grimmie's death, Perkins was heartbroken. In a way of honoring her friend and roommate, Perkins has recorded a new single "Angels." The song finds Perkins belting lines like "We're all temporary from the time we're born" and "There must be angels watching over you" over soulful piano chords and sighing trumpet.
"Not sure what to do, I decided to honor her the only way I know how," Perkins tells Rolling Stone. "With a song."
Grimmie, a committed Christian and a contestant of the Voice, was murdered on June 10. She was laid to rest in a private service on Thursday. On Friday, her family also held a public memorial service for Grimmie, releasing this tribute video of the slain singer.
"Angels" was written by Perkins' bandleader, guitarist and beau Eric Warner, also from the Twin Cities. The two played together in the hard-rock band Scarlet Haze prior to Perkins' "Voice" stint. Both she and Grimmie were working hard on their post-"Voice" careers but apparently stayed in touch.
"Christina was a beautiful person inside and out," Perkins says in a statement. "I will miss her bubbly personality, quirkiness and talent. I wanted to honor her the only way I know how, with a song. Fly on, sister. This is a tribute to her and those lost that same weekend in the Orlando shooting. May we find a way to move forward in life making peace while letting go of evil."
All proceeds from "Angels" will benefit Grimmie's GoFundMe, which benefits the the late singer's family. After that fund expires, Perkins will donate the proceeds to a scholarship set up by Grimmie's family with her former New Jersey high school.
