Trisha Yearwood Talks About Her Role as Virgin Mary in "The Passion" Musical
Country music artist Trisha Yearwood talks about her upcoming role in the live televised musical The Passion. Filmed in New Orleans, Yearwood will play the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in this modern day depiction of Jesus Christ's final hours on earth. The Passion will air on Fox on March 20 at 8PM ET.
Meanwile, actor Tyler Perry will take on a new kind of role: he will be the host and narrator of the two-hour live musical depicting the martyrdom of Christ, featuring a procession of hundreds lugging a 20-foot illuminated cross through the streets of New Orleans. The script was written by High School Musical's Peter Barsocchini and is told through the use of popular music, which was arranged by executive producer and music producer Adam Anders (Glee, Rock of Ages). Latin pop singer-actor Jencarlos Canela will play Jesus Christ, Chris Daughtry will play Judas Iscariot, and the musical also features Seal and bachata star Prince Royce.
Yearwood was recently interviewed in Today where she explains that the music for the televised musical is all recorded separately. The singer won't actually meet her fellow castmates until two days prior to the live performance. "It was really cool to me how everybody's songs fit," she says. "When they're woven into the story they all work."
So what does husband Garth Brooks think of the live musical? Yearwood admits that she thinks he's nervous for her.
"He's like, 'I'm going to be your support however you want. If you want me to go to New Orleans and hold your hand I will. If you want me not to go, I won't go,'" she explains. "I don't know what I want. I haven't decided yet. I've still got a few days. He's probably going to have to be there."
Yearwood admits that she is "really nervous" about the role as this is her first time starring in a live musical.
