Boyd Bailey Discloses How Two Minutes in the Bible Can Change the Lives of Men
Boyd Bailey, the founder of Wisdom Hunters (ministry that encourages Christian to live by the Word), has just released his new book Two Minutes in the Bible for Men. For over 33 years Boyd Bailey has edified men to connect with their Creator through prayer and scripture study in order to be a faithful servant of the Lord. In his new book Two Minutes in the Bible for Men (Harvest House), Boyd shares how two minutes in the Word can transform the life and character of a man.
Hallels: Boyd, thanks for doing this interview with us. Let's start with yourself, tell us moe about yourself.
Nice to be with you. I did not grow up in church, but a couple of men invested in me early on that made a huge difference in my life. One who is now my father-in-law, James. He and his wife Jean's evangelism with me was love. They loved each other and loved me, so as a freshman in college I came to Christ. Rita and I married soon after. Then I graduated from seminary, worked in churches for 10 years (the last was First Baptist Atlanta with Andy Stanley and his dad), and I have served in various ministries since then. We have six grandchildren, four daughters and four son-in-laws.
Hallels: You are the founder of Wisdom Hunters, what is Wisdom Hunters all about?
Our passion is to apply unchanging truth in a changing world.
When I was a 32 year old associate Pastor I read Wisdom Hunters by Randall Arthur. It rocked my world to move from legalism to grace. I became friends with the author still support his mission work overseas. At the same time a mentor of mine challenged me to read a chapter in Proverbs ever day for ten years. So, by God's grace I did, missing just a few days along the way. At the end of the 10 years I started in 2003 writing daily devotionals out of my quiet time that I named Wisdom Hunters. Now we are a daily devotional ministry with over 170,000 followers from email, apps and social media. I love encouraging others to discover God's will and the love of their heavenly Father in HIs word.
Hallels: Congratulations on your new book "Two Minutes in the Bible for Men." What's the book about?
The first sentence of the introduction reads: Men its all about what God wants for us, not what we think we need for ourselves. So I share my own struggles with pride and self reliance and the daily process of surrendering to the Lord in humility and receiving His grace to live the Christian life. Some of the broad themes I address are: Humility, prayer, work, leadership, being a husband, dad, friend, money, forgiveness, service, living in community and God's will.
Hallels: Why a book for men?
I love men. I understand some of the struggles of having a distant dad, living in a single parent home with my mom and two brothers. I also believe men have a wonderful opportunity to not only be mentored, but to mentor others. I like what Bob Goff says, "Hold me accountable, but also hold me close."
Hallels: How can two minutes with God through the Bible change men's lives?
I like to frame our time with God like investing money. We may not see immediate returns, but over months and years the Holy Spirit begins to remove rough edges and grow us into the likeness of Christ. We are born in God's image and spend a lifetime growing in His likeness.
Hallels: What are some of the challenges men often face that prevents them from reading the Bible daily? How do you overcome them?
Men are tired and busy, so I challenge them to go to bed a little bit earlier and trust God to save them time through their investment of prayer and Bible study. I also describe their time with the Lord as a bathing their soul. Regular spiritual cleansing keeps them from being a stinking mess!
Hallels: From your own experience, how has God changed you through the Scriptures over the years? Can you give us an example of such a change?
When Rita and I became empty nesters almost five years ago we attended a Marriage Intensive with a curriculum on Emotional Fitness. I learned skills and biblical principles on how to comfort Rita first before I confronted her with truth. We learned authentic and lasting confession, repentance and forgiveness in our relationship. The past four and a half years we've been in community with four other couples who had the same experience and who wanted to grow together in our journey in emotional wholeness. I like the statement: we can be emotional and not spiritual, but we can't be spiritual and not be emotional.
Hallels: Where can our readers find out more about you, your speaking schedule, and your new book?
