Jordan Smith Honored by Harlan County with Highway Signs

On Friday, Harlan County Judge-Executive honored the winner of season 9's The Voice Jordan Smith with three highway signs. The first traffic sign is the highway sign that will be posted on Highway 119 near the Harlan-Bell county line. Two other signs -- one on the Harlan-Letcher county line and one on Highway 421 near the Kentucky-Virginia border. The signs, which read "Harlan County - Home of Jordan Smith - NBC's The Voice Season 9 Winner," are scheduled to go up next week.
Smith, a committed Christian, has already scored two #1 Billboard Christian hits, including his rendition of Mark Lowry's classic "Mary Did You Know." Moreover, Jordan made history on the Christian chart, scoring both the Nos. 1 and 2 titles for the week of January 2. Smith has recently performed the National Anthem at Rupp Arena during a University of Kentucky basketball game and for the Panthers Seahawks NFC Division playoff. More recently, he performed during the BET 17th Annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration. He sang the hymn 'His Eye is on the Sparrow' and got a standing ovation for his performance.
After a prayer by Magistrate Bill Moore, Mosley said: "Jordan Smith means so much to the people of Harlan County. He's the voice of Harlan County, but he's turned into the voice of Appalachia."
According to Mosley, Smith has already had a positive impact on tourism in Harlan. "Today is a day to celebrate Jordan's accomplishments, and forever stamp his name at the front doors of Harlan County as perhaps the most famous person to come from these hills," said Mosley. "The signs we're fixing to unveil will be at three different locations in our county."
"That's so cool," Smith said as he and Mosley removed the cover from the sign. "I lived on the Harlan-Bell county line for 18 years until I went to college. Literally right on the line. I'm pretty sure it split my house. I would go to sleep in Harlan County and go grab some food from the kitchen in Bell County."
Smith said he always knew he was home when he saw the Harlan County sign. "Thank you," Smith said. "This is really, really sweet - and cool."
On March 18, Smith will release his debut album "Something Beautiful."
