'St. Vincent and the Grenadines' Commemorates Its 35th Independence Day
"St. Vincent and the Grenadines" (SVG) memorialized 35 years of independence from the United Kingdom. That is about 260 years as a colony of France and United Kingdom.
Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves notes that the archipelago suggested a positive yearly growth in the economic aspect, as per Prensa Latina. Since 2011 to 2013, the prime minister noted that the economy has increased by 4.9 per cent. However, the prime minister also admitted that there is negative acceleration with regard to the comeback of the economic status.
"This improvement has just about edged ahead of the aggregate decline in the economu for the three-year period 2008 to 2010, inclusive," Prime Minister Gonsalves said in a statement in Jamaica Observer.
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Amhim Eustace disagrees and claims that there is no reason to celebrate this independence, as per Jamaica Observer.
The country was also harshly hit by five large climatic events. In 2010, there was Hurricane Tomas. Floods damaged the area last April 2011. Heavy downpours led to devastation at the end of 2013, while a couple of long drought periods took place in the first five months of 2010 and 2014. According to the finance minister, the natural disasters that ran through the country lead to substantial losses as well as damages to properties by hundreds of millions of dollars. The loss and damage is comparable to one third of the gross domestic product of the country.
It was also clarified by the prime minister that there will be distinctive employment programs for public workers as well as university graduates. He also added that the administration has not reduced its budget allocation for major state areas, which include healthcare, education, housing, homeland security, as well as agriculture. In addition, there is a slight instability to employ an adequate level of new candidates to their labor market. It is quite a challenge to retain the laborers, particularly in the private sector.
John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State, expressed his felicitations for the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and has sanctioned the links between the two nations. He spoke his thoughts in a statement in Latino Foxnews. "We partner with your government on everything from HIV/AIDS prevention to the promotion of human rights and the environment," he said. "Working together we can broaden and deepen our relationship to benefit all our people," he added.
"St. Vincent and the Grenadines" received the position of State associated with the United Kingdom on Oct. 27, 1969. Ten years after, the country obtained its total independence.
