'Ouija' Review: Hasbro/Michael Bay Production Fails to Impress Viewers
Just in time to add an eerie sensation as the Halloween approaches, a time with the spirits of the dead will be fulfilled by "Ouija," a horror-thriller film of Hasbro/Michael Bay Production.
The film was created from a traditionally creepy spirit board that hooked horror-enthusiasts particularly youngsters. By mere exaggeration, the film is an attempt to bring back to life, not only the spirits but also the belief in supernatural beings.
"Ouija" is quite a failure and has failed to meet the expectations for a horror film, if we are to look at the movie reviews which commented not only on the plot but the thought expressed in "Ouija" as well.
A.V.Club reported that although it is a game board movie, the characters could be directed into any action after the initial steps of the magic spell to the board are satisfied. It's just like perfecting a movie, with all the technical requirements but it lacks the stimulus to awaken the inner being of its characters.
IGN News revealed certain shortcomings in the film, such as the lead role of Olivia Cooke playing the character of Laine whose friend Debbie died without giving her the chance to say goodbye. The option left is to talk to her spirit through Ouija board. But still she failed to breathe life into every act of the character.
It could be that the script is lax in terms of intensifying character roles. It can be seen that they are just religiously following the narrative rather than actually giving substance to the role. Actors failed to add substance into their characters.
According to New York Daily News, it's not bad to make a horror movie out of Ouija board since it is really for doing supernatural acts.
However, horror films should draw out an intense feeling of fear from the viewers. Hence, characters that are not yet proven in the realm of science should be performed well. Or else it would make the movie appear mediocre, in the sense that viewers could never appreciate what is fearful in it.
