Scarlett Johansson Starring and Producing New TV Series 'The Custom of the Country'

Scarlett Johansson Starring and Directing New TV Series 'The Custom of the Country'
Actress Scarlett Johansson will be returning to television for a new series titled The Custom of the Country, in which she will both star in and executive produce.
The series will be eight episodes long based on Edith Wharton's 1913 novel of the same name. The story follows Undine Spragg (Johansson) in her ruthless ascension to New York high society. British playwright-screenwriter Christopher Hampton (Atonement) will adapt the novel for the screen.
Deadline reports that the 29-year-old actress will play a woman whose "rise to the top of New York's high society from her nouveau riche roots provides a provocative and thoroughly modern commentary on the upwardly mobile and the aspirations that eventually cause their ruin."
A channel has not been announced for the new series but it is expected to be on a cable or premium cable network.
Johansson has mostly stuck to movies during her career and while she has been on television shows, Custom of the Country will be her first major television role.
The series will be backed by Sony Pictures TV and written by British playwright-screenwriter Christopher Hampton (Dangerous Liaisons, Atonement) from his original screenplay. Hampton had originally written a feature script adaptation of Custom Of The Country nearly two decades ago, reportedly for Michelle Pfeiffer who had starred in the 1993 feature Age Of Innocence, based on Wharton's book. It was published in 2002 as part of a collection of Hampton screenplays.
Scarlett Johansson is best known for her roles in The Horse Whisperer (1998), Ghost World (2001) and Lost in Translation (2003) with earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination.
She has been a featured Marvel cast in several movies recently including Iron Man 2 (2010), The Avengers (2012) and Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and is set to reprise the role in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
