iPhone 6 review: bigger screen, powerful specs, and overall, worth the wait
iPhone 6 review: bigger screen, powerful specs, and overall, worth the wait
So, how does the highly coveted iPhone 6 fare compared to its predecessors and the competition?
Starting from its design, iPhone 6 has combined more screen space and a better resolution with a compact, ultra-portable size. At 6.9mm and 129g, the iPhone 6 is slimmer and lighter than the iPhone 5.
The power button has been moved to the upper right-hand side for easier access. Available in Space Grey, Silver, or Gold, the aluminum housing gives the iPhone 6 a sturdier and a classier feel.
Screen
The iPhone 6's 4.7 inch display has a resolution of 1,334x750 with a pixel density of 326ppi, the same as iPhone 5S.
Compared to the Nexus 5, iPhone 6 delivered consistently sharper images. Although it fell short of the LG G3, the difference is negligible.
This time, iPhone 6 used dual-domain pixels, which deliver consistent colors from all viewing angles. The iPhone 6 also has better contrast and black levels than Apple's earlier models. Photos captured using the iPhone 6 were clear, crisp, and highly detailed.
The higher screen resolution means that a lot of apps have to be updated, as these look low-res on the iPhone 6.
The screen's ion-strengthened glass is both scratch and shatter resistant.
iOS 8
With Apple's latest operating system, users can work across multiple Apple devices seamlessly.
Keyboard
Apple's QuickType feature provides optional words and phrases as you start to type. Third party keyboards can be installed, too.
TouchID
Users can secure their iPhone 6 with the TouchID feature, which uses the individual's fingerprint as a security pass.
TouchID works with the Apple Pay system - fingerprints can then be used to confirm online purchases and other transactions.
Fast hardware
iPhone 6 uses the Apple A8 SoC, which has a dual-core 1.4GHz CPU. The Metal API is expected to improve performance.
Battery life
The non-replaceable 1,810mAh battery lasts for approximately 12 hours and 58 minutes in video playback tests conducted. But if a long battery life is your priority, a more durable Android model would do.
M8 co-processor
The M8 co-processor monitors the phone's sensors: the accelerometer, gyroscope and, new, barometer for height measurement.
Camera
The iPhone 6 camera has an f/2.2 aperture lens, a 1/3 in sensor with 1.5µm pixels, and an 8MP resolution, but without the optical image stabilization (OIS) feature.
Wireless support
The iPhone 6 is Wi-FI, 3G, and LTE ready.
Storage
iPhone 6 comes in 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB. It doesn't have a micro SD slot to expand storage capacity, so be sure to go for a model that meets your storage requirements.
The verdict
In terms of overall quality, the iPhone 6 is Apple's best smartphone to date.
And with its eco system getting better in time, working with other Apple devices has never been easier.
