Kendrick Lamar's New "i" Song: The First Single Off Still Untitled Next Album, Upbeat Yet Introspective
Last September 23, Kendrick Lamar released a song titled "i", the first single from his third still untitled studio album. Six hours after the release, it has raked up nearly one million plays says Carimah Townes of Think Progress who also describes the song as "the 2014 hip hop version of Maya Angelou's 'Still I Rise.'" Darian Lusk of CBS News on the other hand maintained the 'i' is definitely different from anything Kendrick released before, preaching self-reliance and sounding a bit like a tango, in a great way.
Lamar's major-label debut studio album 'good kid, m.A.A.d city' back in 2012 was a certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America and has spawned the Top 40 Hits 'Swimming Pools (Drank),' 'Bitch,' 'Poetic Justice,' and 'Don't Kill My Vibe.' It also got him seven nominations at the last Annual Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Best Rap Song.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, the 27-year-old Lamar who is still working on the other songs in his still untitled LP album said, "If I can say anything about this record, it's that it will connect again. There was a lot I left out of 'good kid' - it could have been a 30-track album. There are a few new [songs] that can tie in with what I was talking about." He also revealed that "there's one particular [untitled] track I'm really excited about. It's one where I just went in the booth and spilled out what I want to say at that moment. I just free-styled, because I really just wanted to grab the raw emotion of it."
Also, perhaps consistent with the title "i" of the initially released song, it's not likely that other artists will get to make cameo performances in Lamar's next album. Said he, "I have so much to say! It's somewhat selfish of me."
