Insurgent: Next In The Divergent Series, Lionsgate's Newest Young-Adult Franchise Following Twilight And The Hunger Games
Insurgent movie release date is March 20, 2015, as announced by Summit Entertainment, a Lionsgate subsidiary, following Divergent's $4.9 million debut take at the box office.
Said Lionsgate chief executive officer Jon Feltheimer in his press statement, "We're off to a great start with strong numbers from all regions of the country, urban, suburban and rural alike. We're confident that 'Divergent' is on its way to becoming another important franchise for us, and we have just greenlit the second film, 'Insurgent'."
Directed by Robert Schwentke, the Insurgent movie cast will have Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Jai Courtney, Ansel Elgort, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Maggie Q, and Mekhi Phifer reprising their roles in the previous Divergent movie. According to the latest Insurgent movie news, the sequel will have Octavia Spencer, Suki Waterhouse, Jonny Weston, Naomi Watts, Daniel Dae Kim, Stephanie Leigh Schlund, Rosa Salazar and Emjay Anthony as additional cast members. The official Insurgent movie trailer will be unveiled during the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I premiere on November 21, 2014.
Divergent and Insurgent are the first and second books in the Divergent trilogy for the young-adult genre written by Veronica Roth. The third book in the series, Allegiant, will also be made into a movie. In fact, it will be made into two films, namely, The Divergent Series: Allegiant Part I which will be released on March 18, 2016, and The Divergent Series: Allegiant Part II which will screen in theaters on March on March 24, 2017.
According to a report from Variety, Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns said, "...we like the idea of a 'Divergent' film every March to complement our 'Hunger Games' films every November." For those interested, the Insurgent book is also available on Amazon and Kindle online bookstores.
With its new "Divergent" franchise, Lionsgate/Summit now dominates in the young-adult niche, considering that the five "Twilight" films earned over $3.3 billion worldwide while the first two "Hunger Games" have made over $1.4 billion. Divergent, which was released to theaters on March 18, 2014, has so far already grossed about $275 million in box office earnings.
