Underworld Movie Franchise Being Rebooted; Vampires and Werewolves Returning
Before the sparkling tween vampire love story conquered the silver screens, back in 2003 the film Underworld clawed its way into theaters.
The Underworld film franchise has since then spawned 3 films Underworld: Evolution, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, and the first to be shown in 3D Underworld: Awakening back in 2012. The franchise grossed over $458 million.
A reboot of the franchise is now in the works.
The Hollywood Reporter says that Lakeshore Entertainment has hired writer Corey Goodman to helm the script, with Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi producing the new film. Goodman has previously written the script for films such as Priest which starred Paul Bettany back in 2011 and the upcoming film The Last Witch Hunter which is in pre-production and will star Vin Diesel. The idea of a reboot seems to be a bit underwhelming, knowing that the last film, Awakening, was only released 2 years ago and ended without finishing the whole franchise's story.
This might be an opportunity to copy the successful reboot of the Spider-Man films, which to a lot of fans felt premature at first, but then became much of a success. It then continued with plans of multiple sequels and spin-offs.
The first, second and fourth films of the Vampire vs Werewolves franchise starred actress Kate Beckinsale and has established her as a genuine action heroine, and has since then been seen in a lot of film. The original film was directed by Len Wiseman, who is also Beckinsale's husband. It has not yet been revealed if either of them will play a part in the reboot.
