Emma Stone Goes Broadway in ‘Cabaret,' Replaces Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles
Emma Stone is all set to make her Broadway debut in the 2014 Broadway revival of "Cabaret," as announced by Roundabout Theatre Company, Wednesday. The 25-year-old "Amazing Spiderman" actress will play the saucy singer Sally Bowles starting November 11 all through February 1,2015 with shows happening at Studio 54.
The musical opened on April 24 this year with Golden Globe winner and three-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming as the Emcee. After an extended run, Williams, who also made her Broadway debut with the role will be making her final performance on November 9. Cumming, on the other hand will continue to play the Emcee through March 29.
The "Magic in the Moonlight" star was originally set for the role of Sally Bowles but had to withdraw due to scheduling conflicts. This time, however, she is definitely slipping into the role of Kit Kat Klub's main singer.
The musical is based on the 1951 Broadway play"I Am a Camera,"which was based on the 1939 short novel "Goodbye to Berlin" by Christopher Isherwood. It tells the story of a 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles at the infamous Kit Kat Klub, as she and her ensemble entertain the crowd nightly during the rise of the Nazis in 1931 Berlin.
The current production is directed by Sam Mendes, co-directed and choreographed by Rob Marshall, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. It is the third revival of the original Broadway and Tony Award winning production in 1966 at the Broadhurst Theatre.
"Cabaret" was also made into a musical film in 1972, starring Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles and Joel Grey as the Emcee. It holds the record for most Academy Award wins but lost the Best Picture honor to "The Godfather."
