Chart Rewind: September 2010 – Sanctus Real’s “Lead Me” Finds Its Voice at No. 1

In September 2010, the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart crowned a new leader: "Lead Me" by Sanctus Real. More than just another radio single, the track became a movement, striking a chord with families, churches, and listeners who longed for a more vulnerable picture of faith and leadership.
The song, released in March 2010 as part of the band's Pieces of a Real Heart album, was born out of an intimate moment. Frontman Matt Hammitt recalls his wife asking him to be more present at home, not only as a husband and father but also as a spiritual leader. That raw conversation shaped the lyrics: "Lead me with strong hands / Stand up when I can't / Don't leave me hungry for love / Chasing dreams, but what about us?"
By late summer, Christian radio had embraced the song's authenticity. On the chart dated September 11, 2010, "Lead Me" climbed to No. 1, holding the top spot for an impressive nine straight weeks through November 6. Over the course of its run, it logged a full 52 weeks on the Hot Christian Songs chart, finishing as the No. 8 song of 2010 and staying strong enough to rank No. 19 for 2011.
The music video, released September 24, 2010, mirrored the song's plea. It portrayed a man drifting from his family before rediscovering his calling to return home, underscoring the message that leadership begins not with control but with humility.
Critics and fans alike responded. At the 2011 GMA Dove Awards, "Lead Me" earned nominations for Song of the Year and Pop/Contemporary Recorded Song of the Year, cementing its place among the most impactful tracks in Christian music that year.
Fifteen years later, "Lead Me" remains a defining moment in Sanctus Real's career. In a landscape often dominated by praise anthems, the song stood out for its honesty-a ballad that dared to admit weakness and pointed to the strength that comes from surrendering to God. For many, it wasn't just a hit single in September 2010-it was a prayer set to music.
