Sean Rodriguez Opens Up About His New Moniker and Working on New Music

A rising star readily embraced for his charismatic, high-octane performances that kept audiences on their feet during last year's 40-city Winter Jam tour, Sean BE stands poised for a fresh season of music and ministry as Sean Rodriguez. The new moniker, a nod to Rodriguez's family faith heritage, sets the stage for two highly anticipated singles from the WieRok Entertainment recording artist.  

Opening Rodriguez's new era is "The Unbelievable," a worshipful pop anthem now available on streaming platforms. Co-penned by Rodriguez, Will Strotz, and Sidewalk Prophets' Daniel Macal, the soaring track-also produced by Macal-celebrates God's power to transform lives. 

Q: Sean, it's great to catch up with you. You recently had a name change and you have decided to use the moniker Sean Rodriguez; why the change?

Yes! My grandfather began a church in the inner city of Denver, Colorado, and has served that area faithfully for more than 40 years. He has been a light to so many and continues to help change lives through the word of God. He is also the one who taught me the value of ministry and showed me what it looked like to live a life "all in" for Christ. He was there for me through the hardest times in my life and celebrated my biggest wins with me, and his guidance played a major role in who I am today. To pay tribute to my grandfather, Pastor Rodriguez, and the impact he has had in the community through his church, as well as in my own life, I decided to honor him with my name change. I know everyone's days on earth are numbered, and we won't have forever together here, so taking his name at this point in my ministry ensures that my grandfather and I can celebrate this season together. 

Q: Tell us more about your grandfather. In what ways has he been a spiritual mentor to you?

I think the biggest thing I've learned from him is faith and obedience to God. He and my grandmother have so many stories about how God pulled them through seemingly impossible situations. They often tell me and my wife, "It wasn't always easy following where God was calling us, but when we did, He always took care of us." My grandfather has taught me to listen to the voice of God before my own when it comes to decisions for my life, and as a leader.

Another important thing he demonstrated is the passion and joy to minister, regardless of outside situations. He could be sick, without sleep, his arm in a sling (it's happened before), his vocal cords giving out (also happened), but if it's Sunday morning, he will stand up and preach and you'll have no idea anything is wrong. The joy he finds in God is stronger than anything else, and that's something I've tried to demonstrate in my own life and ministry too. 

Q: How will your music be different or the same moving forward?

Before I was in full time music I led family ministry, and it was awesome getting to work with kids, teenagers, parents, and even grandparents-all at the same time. I loved it! In my writing season last year, God made this message to me pretty clear. He said, "I didn't take you out of ministry to go and do music. I extended your ministry platform to reach more people through music. Focus on reaching the people I called you to reach, families." Once that message hit my heart the direction was clear-make music to reach the family. I'm excited about that because it takes the lid off the creative box. The music my team and I have been writing lately is so diverse and exciting. I can't wait for people to hear what's lined up!

Q: Tell us more about the heart and story behind your single "The Unbelievable."

This song comes from Ephesians 3:20, "Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or imagine." I love the part of the verse that says, "...through His mighty power at work within us," because it clarifies that incredible things can happen not because of what we do, but because we believe in the God who can do the unbelievable, and because of His grace, His power is at work in us.

"The Unbelievable" is also special to me because it was written with two great friends of mine, Daniel Macal of Sidewalk Prophets and Will Strotz. When you get to do what you love with friends you love-who are also doing what they love-it makes for an awesome moment, and I'm so thankful that God allowed us all to work together in this way. 

Q: What about the song "Glory"?

Walter and Holly Halliwell and I wrote "Glory" together. We started the session by talking about how secular pop music is becoming increasingly rooted in self-glorification and the effect that has on culture. People become influenced to chase after glory for themselves, often regardless of the cost. We talked about how dangerous that can become as we were not created to handle the weight of the glory we desire; we will destroy ourselves chasing it. This drew us back to Ephesians 3:20- the same verse that inspired "The Unbelievable." The verse begins with, "Now all glory to God," and we knew that was the theme of the song. From that conversation we wrote the line, "We weren't made to be worshipped, we were made to worship God," and the song was birthed from there.

Q: What can fans look forward to in terms of music for 2024?

You may have noticed that my two new singles sound very different from each other. Something I love about these two songs is that they are inspired by the same Bible verse, but they share that message in distinctly different ways. I look forward to more single releases that stretch across genres and reflect the family ministry that I love. I've never been more excited about the music God has given me to release, so I hope listeners share in that enthusiasm as we continue!
