Melvin Crispell III's #1 Song Was Written by His Dad Almost 30 Years Ago

Melvin Crispell III is elated as he scores his first #1. His debut single "Wonderful is Your Name" climbs from No. 2 to 1 this week on Billboard's Gospel Airplay chart (dated Aug. 21). "Wonderful" was written almost 30 years ago by Crispell III's father, the late Melvin Crispell Jr., who was also a gospel musician and songwriter.
Crispell III exclaims, "W O W....My very first @billboard #1‼️ My emotions have been everywhere today. God is just sooo good. I can't thank him enough. This is a result of waiting on and TRUSTING in God.. I have to thank ALL my @rcainspiration family especially the incredible radio team @chitowncathy @tamarfelita for making this possible.
@bandmvp THANK YOU GUYS this could not have happened without you. I'm so grateful!. Lastly, thank you to EVERY radio announcer and every listener of my music! You all's support means the world to me and I pray for your continued support in all that is to come. LOVE YALL BIG‼️ "
Fellow artist Travis Greene offers his congratulations, "Melvin has overcome soooo much!! I knew both his mom & dad. They would be so proud of him!! This is AMAZING!!! Congrats maaaaaan. Keep Climbing!! Your vocals are in a league of their own, but your humility is what God loves the most."
As for the song, Crispell III is honored that it came from the pen of his dad. "Of course it is incredible to top the charts, an absolutely surreal experience. But to do so with a song that my father wrote nearly 30 years ago is something truly remarkable," Crispell III tells Billboard. "I am just 24, which means it was written before I was born.
To have the opportunity to share it with the world, and it be a hit, speaks to how timeless his writing is," he muses. "I am honored to carry on the legacy. I pray that I make him, and everyone who has supported me, proud."
