Shocking End to 'Scandal' Season 3 Leaves Audience Eager for Season 4
The world of ABC television drama was rocked with the season 3 finale of the hit show Scandal. The finale, like much of the third season itself, was loaded with moments intending to stun the audience; or if not to stun us, then at least to overwhelm us with feelings (in true Shonda Rhimes fashion). The show simultaneously seemed to destroy itself while also setting itself up for a jam-packed fourth season.
In the final episode, Fitz was re-elected as president, at the cost of two lives: vice president Sally Langston, who died in the penultimate episode of season three, and his son Jerry, who dies of bacterial meningitis at the hands of Olivia's father, Rowan Pope. Olivia, incorrectly assuming that it was her mother who was responsible for Jerry's death, flees with Jake as a result of believing that she is the reason for the death and destruction of the people around her. Meanwhile, Huck and Quinn's love affair is revealed, and Charlie in turn unveils the whereabouts of Huck's wife and son, leading Huck to be reunited with his family.
Finally, we see Olivia reveal to Fitz that Mellie was raped was Fitz's father. Although Fitz's love for Olivia remains strong, he finds himself unable to leave Mellie after the loss of their son and his new knowledge of her rape at the hands of his father. Will Olivia's abrupt departure drive Fitz to leave Mellie at last? Only season four will tell...
