T. D. Jakes Criticized for Wearing Jeans in the Pulpit
Bishop T.D. Jakes of the Potter's House in Dallas, Texas has been criticized over social media not for his teaching or his preaching style or his beliefs. But some of Christians criticized the Christian author and speaker for wearing ripped jeans to the pulpit recently instead of sporting his usual suit and tie.
Jakes actually shared a photo of his new look on his Instagram account (@bishopjakes). He wrote, "I want to thank One Church for a great service! Loved the atmosphere there. The presence of the Lord and the kindness of the people explain why Hollywood is buzzing about this young church and its rapid growth!"
Unfortunately, not many netizens were impressed. "To the house of God, I would say yes always look your best... After that you could wear whatever you please... You wouldn't go in ripped clothes to visit the president or queen of England, would you? It's the level of respect".
Jakes replied, "@dressed_2_impresss Scripture please? I certainly want to comply with the word. I just missed the one about jeans in the pulpit."
"I mean the Bible doesn't give us direct counsel on exactly what we should wear to our Bible meetings but think about this... We dress better for job interviews and this kind of look would be considered unprofessional, so wouldn't we always want to display our best for God? Just a thought. Not judging. Everybody has a right to make their decisions on dress," one person wrote.
Another commented: "The jeans are not age appropriate. End of story. Has nothing to do with him being a minister. If my dad wore these jeans, I would be mortified. There are plenty of styles out there that would be more flattering on the Bishop."
On the other hand, some people were more forgiving towards Jakes' new style. "Pastor T.D. Jakes be you!!! Love your spirit, you walk with the love of God in you. May God cover you against (those) nay sayers. God bless!" an enthusiastic supporter wrote.
Jakes is the bishop of The Potter's House, a non-denominational American megachurch, with 30,000 members. T. D. Jakes' church services and evangelistic sermons are broadcast on The Potter's Touch, which airs on Lightsource.com, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, Black Entertainment Television, the Daystar Television Network, The Word Network and The Miracle Channel in Canada. Other aspects of Jakes' ministry include an annual revival called "MegaFest" that draws more than 100,000 people, an annual women's conference called "Woman Thou Art Loosed", and gospel music recordings.
