Black-ish TV Series: Laurence Fishburne Takes Turn At Being A Laid-back Funnyman Father Character
Black-ish, ABC's newest sitcom series, airs every Wednesday at 9:30 PM beginning September 24. A half hour TV show, it is loosely based on its creator, Kenya Barris, own life as an upwardly mobile black man. As for its gist, the writer in an interview with Indie Wire said, "I decided to do this project when I looked up and realized that everywhere I go I'm constantly the fly in buttermilk... I'm usually THE Black guy at work. We're THE Black family in the neighborhood. My kids are basically THE Black kids at school. I think it's kind of a situation of be careful what you wish for. It's almost in like moving on up, I've sort of priced myself "out" of being Black."
The Black-ish TV series stars Anthony Anderson as Andre 'Dre' Johnson, Tracee Ellis Ross as Rainbow Johnson, Yara Shahidi as Zoey Johnson, Mark Adebowale as Andre Johnson, Jr., Miles Brown as Jack Johnson, and Marsai Martin as Diane Johnson. ABC as early as May released the official Black-ish trailer which can be watched on Youtube and other video hosting sites. Although it's still too early in the day to expect a Black-ish wiki fan site, the TV.com staff who've screened the inaugural episode see much promise ahead for the show. One even commented that "while he's not as much of a comedic revelation as Andre Braugher was on Brooklyn Nine-Nine last season, Laurence Fishburne is so relaxed that he's rather infectious."
Laurence Fishburne has a recurring guest spot on the show as Pops, Andre's laid-back father, a role so far removed from those usually seen in the Laurence Fishburne movies like Morpheus in the Matrix trilogy or Mr. Clean in Apocalypse Now as well as his other TV shows like CSI and Hannibal. Incidentally, Fishburne's company, Cinema Gypsy, is also producing Black-ish. Being one of the highest paid actors in the world, Laurence Fishburne net worth is $30 million according to Eric Roberson's take on the top 35 richest black actors. Thus easily, he can relate to the situations posed in the Black-ish storyline of someone who got himself "priced out of being Black."
