Hendersonville Honors Legendary Quartet with “Oak Ridge Boys Bridge” Dedication

The City of Hendersonville, Tennessee, has announced a lasting tribute to one of its most celebrated musical groups by naming the bridge on East Main Street (US-31E), located between Drakes Creek Park and Memorial Park, the Oak Ridge Boys Bridge. The dedication not only honors the group's towering influence in country and gospel music but also acknowledges their deep roots in the community of Hendersonville, a city long known for its rich musical heritage. Plans are underway for a formal dedication ceremony later this year, where officials, community members, and the remaining Oak Ridge Boys will gather to unveil the new name and celebrate the group's enduring contributions. In addition, specialty illuminated logo signs will be installed on the bridge, ensuring that the tribute is both visible and memorable for residents and visitors alike.

For the Oak Ridge Boys, the honor is as personal as it is symbolic. "To have a bridge named after The Oak Ridge Boys is a huge honor for our group," expressed Duane Allen, reflecting on what the dedication means to him and his fellow bandmates. Richard Sterban added, "Every time we cross this bridge, we will be reminded that Hendersonville is a very special place," underscoring the deep connection the group has maintained with the city they have long called home. William Lee Golden also shared his appreciation, saying, "I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to the City of Hendersonville for paying tribute to The Oak Ridge Boys with this bridge dedication." Their words capture both the humility and gratitude of a group that has given so much to music and to their community.

This recognition comes at a significant moment in the group's history, following the passing of long-time member Joe Bonsall in July 2024 after complications from ALS. Bonsall's health struggles had led him to retire from touring earlier that year, but his powerful voice, energetic stage presence, and kind spirit remain an indelible part of the group's identity. His passing was deeply mourned not only by fans but also by the Hendersonville community, making the bridge dedication an especially poignant way to preserve and honor the group's legacy.

The Oak Ridge Boys have long been synonymous with excellence and versatility in American music. From their origins as the Oak Ridge Quartet to their evolution into a powerhouse country and gospel act, they have won multiple Grammy Awards, been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and earned a place on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Their hits, including Elvira, American Made, Bobbie Sue, and Trying to Love Two Women, remain staples of American culture, blending infectious harmonies with an unmistakable sound. Beyond their music, the group has also been recognized with a Tennessee Music Pathways historical marker in Oak Ridge in 2023, further cementing their role as ambassadors of the state's musical legacy.
