'God's Not Dead' Climbs to #2 in Box Office in Opening Weekend, Big Win for the Film Opening in Select Theaters (VIDEO)
God's Not Dead opened to select theaters across the country this past weekend (March 21) and the turnout has exceeded early expectations. The faith-based film opened in fewer than 800 theaters and still brought in 8.2 million at the box office over the weekend. That's a per-screen average was over $10,400 from 782 locations across the U.S.
The strong showing made God's Not Dead a surprise climb to No. 2 in box office earnings from it's opening weekend, only behind the new action movie, "Divergent" from Shailene Woodley. The faith-based audiences are once again proving to be a strong supporter at the U.S. box office of movies that they want to see. The movie produced by Pure Flix Entertainment and Red Entertainment and with cameos from "Duck Dynasty" couple Willie & Korie Robertson, was only thought to reach $5 million through Sunday, still an impressive figure, but greatly surpassed expectations. Earlier this month, the Mark Burnett-produced Son of God opened to $26 million at the box office (see our interview with Mark Burnett HERE) while Russell Crowe's Biblical tale Noah is expected to top the box office next weekend.
Storyline: Present-day college freshman and devout Christian, Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper), finds his faith challenged on his first day of Philosophy class by the dogmatic and argumentative Professor Radisson (Kevin Sorbo). Radisson assigns him a daunting task: if Josh will not admit that "God Is Dead," he must prove God's existence by presenting well-researched, intellectual arguments and evidence over the course of the semester, and engage Radisson in a head-to-head debate in front of the class. GOD'S NOT DEAD weaves together multiple stories of faith, doubt and disbelief, culminating in a dramatic call to action.
God's Not Dead starred David A.R. White, Shane Harper, Kevin Sorbo, Willie & Korie Robertson and Marco Khan. The film was directed by Harold Cronk and written by Hunter Dennis, Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon. If you have not seen the movie yet, make sure to check out God's Not Dead while it is still in theaters. Check your local listings for a theater near you.
