'Outcast' Starring Nicolas Cage Release Date, Spoilers: Banned in China? Know More Controversies
Nicolas Cage's latest action drama movie, "Outcast", according to Daily Mail was blocked in China at the last minute when it was supposed to premier in Chinese theaters.
The movie was pulled just hours before it was due for wide screening. A representative from Arclight Films, an Australian-U.S. Production and sales firm, said that they were confused why the distributing company, Yunnan Film Group, decided to cancel "Outcast" last minute.
"We have no idea why it was pulled. We were advised in the middle of the night and locked down to an Asian day-and-date," says Mike Gabrawy, the producer of the film, who was there in Beijing for the movie's first screening.
Violent and bloody scenes are included in Outcast, which is possibly one of the many potential reasons that it was pulled, but the script was fully approved ahead of time.
However, as said in LA Times, the movie's release date was near an upcoming Chinese national holiday, the Golden Week, that begins October 1 and ends October 7. With the observance of the weeklong celebration of the national holiday, foreign movies are not allowed to be shown or released, even though "Outcast" was theoretically exempted for the movie restrictions. Foreign movies are slated for screenings and release in the China mainland on October 10, when the Marvel Studios movie, "Guardians of the Galaxy", is anticipated to be shown in the Chinese theaters.
Foreign movies have been blocked and banned temporarily even years ago because of revenue-sharing agreements and limits on how much sales of tickets they can amass.
Just this past year, the movie "Django Unchained" was also pulled from the theaters just promptly after it was already shown in China. The movie was known for its bloody and violent scenes, therefore forcing the China's State Administration for Radio, Film and Television to remove inappropriate scenes. The film was released again a month later.
As noted by Hollywood Repoter, the "Outcast" script was written by James Dormer, who wrote episodes for Strike Back and Spooks. The movie shows two weary warriors who wandered off to China, where the said two gets involved in romantic affairs and disagreements with Chinese royalty.
"Outcast" stars Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen.
