'Gotham' Cast News: Carol Kane on Her Role as Penguin's Mother, in the New Series 'Gotham'
The second episode of the new series, Gotham, is coming soon. In the first episode, we've all been introduced to Oswald Cobblepot, who is a lowly thug that will eventually become Penguin. But is that all where it started? Did he find all the evil that's inside him in Gotham? The upcoming episodes will tell us a bit about where he came from. The viewers will finally meet Penguin's mother - Gertrude Kabelput played by an Oscar nominee and Emmy award winning actress Carol Kane.
Gertrude Kabelput is a European immigrant who has a "unique mother-son bond" with Oswald a.k.a Penguin. Bruno Heller said in an interview with TV Guide, "If you meet someone's mother, you immediately get an insight into their inner character. It seemed to me that the Napoleonic certainty and self-confidence that the Penguin possesses must have come from a loving and supportive mother. But his mother was pouring love on a vicious sociopath. To render the true pathos of that delusion requires a comic actress of great skill and sensitivity and heart, and Carol Kane has all that in spades along with a silent movie heroine's face that works perfectly with Penguin."
Carol Kane said in an interview with TV Guide that she was extremely excited because the part that she's going to play is complex and really fascinating role. She tells that her character really loved her son and although money was a problem, she always tries to keep up with the standards of the society - dressing up and even manners. She always wishes that she could take care of her son, but he's a grown up man now finding his own way - that part is really difficult for her.
The viewers of course are waiting to see if the way Gertrude brought up Oswald contributed to his "evil" ways or can she appeal to Penguin in some special ways. We've been told that Gotham will tell the story of Penguin and we can only assume that we will see a lot of Gertrude in the upcoming episodes of Gotham.
Gotham airs every Monday 8/7c on FOX. Next episodes titled "The Balloonman" and "Arkham" will be aired Oct. 6 and Oct. 13 respectively.
