Gospel Legend Mosie “Mama” Burks of the Mississippi Mass Choir Passes Away at 92

The gospel music world is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved voices. Mosie "Mama" Burks, the legendary lead vocalist of the Mississippi Mass Choir, has passed away at the age of 92. Her daughter Barbara confirmed the news today via Facebook. Final arrangements are yet to be announced.
Born in 1933 in Forest, Mississippi, Mama Burks was celebrated for her powerful voice, unwavering faith, and joyful stage presence. She joined the Mississippi Mass Choir in 1993 and quickly became a standout performer, ultimately serving as one of the group's longest-tenured and most recognizable members.
She was best known for her dynamic lead vocals on iconic songs such as "They Got the Word" and "I'm Not Tired Yet," performances that became gospel staples and inspired generations of listeners. In 1997, the Mississippi Mass Choir won the Grammy Award for Best Gospel Album by a Choir or Chorus for I'll See You in the Rapture, which featured Mama Burks on the moving track "This Morning When I Rose."
In recent years, she faced health challenges, including a battle with dementia, but her legacy remained vibrant in the hearts of fans and fellow choir members alike. Known affectionately as "Mama Burks," she was more than a singer-she was a spiritual mother figure to many, radiating warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith.
Please keep her family and the entire Mississippi Mass Choir family in your prayers during this difficult time. The world has lost a true gospel matriarch, but her voice and spirit will continue to echo through the music she so passionately shared.
