Bay Turner Hopes His Music Will Infuse Our World of Negativity with Joy
After being discovered by millions on Season 17 of America's Got Talent and Season 10 of BET's Sunday Best, singer/songwriter Bay Turner releases his debut, Centricity Music radio single, "Brand New." It is now available at digital and streaming outlets via BayTurner.lnk.to/BrandNew.
Wholly captivated by the soulful sounds of artists like Donny Hathaway, Luther Vandross and Stevie Wonder when he was a young man, Turner's voice blossomed while in college. After earning his undergraduate degree, he became a rising star in young artist programs affiliated with major opera houses around the world.
As his faith became more of a central force in his life, he began leading worship alongside the iconic Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. Just when he thought he was stepping into a divinely orchestrated era of his career, surgery to remove two benign tumors in his chest nicked and paralyzed one of his vocal cords. After spending months in silence under doctor's orders, new tests miraculously revealed his vocal cords to be seamlessly healed and healthy. Turner went on to sign a label and publishing deal with CentricityMusic with new music created for God's glory.
Q: Bay, thank you for doing this interview with us. When and how did you discover your calling to be involved in the music/worship ministry?
I discovered my calling for music/worship ministry when I stepped foot into Brooklyn Tabernacle and was absolutely rocked by them singing total praise. It was then and there that I realized that the power of music and the truth that music has the ability to transform people's lives. Three months later I was leading worship with Brooklyn Tabernacle and have been watching in awe how God can move through melody and song. Haven't looked back since!
Q: As a Christian, was it a challenge for you to perform at America's Got Talent and BET's Sunday Best? What are your reflections after being in both shows?
It wasn't difficult for me to be a Christian on one of these shows because we all live in a society that doesn't celebrate Jesus. We're all used to having pushback as Christians in this world that we live in, so I just lived out authentically who God has called me to be, and he took care of the rest. And he gave me grace all the way through!
Q: Now that you have signed a deal with Centricity Music, are you working on an album? If so, can you share some of the songwriters and producers you are working with now?
Yes, I'm working on an album that should be out in 2025! I'm working with some of Christian music's best: Tony Wood, Michael Farren, Tedd T, Kyle Williams, Ethan Hulse, and Dwan Hill, just to name a few. I'm so excited to keep collaborating with other artists and songwriters as I continue this journey!
Q: I love your new single, "Brand New." What's the story behind this song?
I wrote "Brand New" out of the place of absolute joy of becoming brand new in Christ. I came to know Jesus a little bit later than most people. I grew up culturally Christian, but I wasn't living my life fully committed to the Lord. He miraculously healed my vocal cords after a freak accident, and I gave my life to him and knew that I could trust him with everything. He made me brand new, so I wanted to write a song about it.
Q: How do you hope "Brand New" and your new songs will impact the lives of your listeners?
I hope that the music infuses their day with joy. There's a lot of negativity and difficulty walking out life as a Christian person in this world and I wanted to give someone the gift of a song that can lift their mood and show them how to praise Him in the storm.
Q: On your website, I read that you are conducting "Community Worship Nights" throughout the summer. Can you tell us more about these nights? What can our readers expect if they attend one of them?
"50 churches, and one big God!" Community Worship Nights are where we go to smaller towns that don't normally have artists come through to bring the gospel and share songs. A lot of these churches that were chosen are usually forgotten about when major tours come through, so it's been awesome to be able to go to churches that are usually looked over and hear them sing praises to God!
