Kylee Shaffer Shares the Heartwarming Story Behind "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief"

Singer and songwriter Kylee Shaffer has just released her brand new album Believe. Shaffer, who is from Draper, Utah, says that the album was a labor of love. "A long time comin!! The recording of this album has been SO fun!!! I can't believe we are done recording and ready to roll!! Doing this project while also working full time between jobs and going to school was almost the death of me BUT God truly just helped me make it happen."
One of the highlights of the new album is Shaffer's emotionally packed cover of "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief." Shaffer writes, "A few weeks ago, I recorded this song with Anna Richey. "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief." I think it is my favorite song on my album. The words are beyond powerful and I tear up every time I listen."

Shaffer continues to tell us the story behind this song. "This is the song that Joseph Smith asked John Taylor to sing in Carthage jail before a mob beat down the door of their room and killed Joseph and his brother Hyrum. They died as martyrs that day. They literally willingly gave their lives for the restored teachings of Christ, so that we could have the beautiful truths that we do.
I know that these men lived and died for truth. I have had the chance to study their lives and read the journal entries and read the things the people around them wrote about them. I have read first-hand accounts describing the miracles that happened around them. They knew that Christ lives and they knew that it was all true.
I am so thankful for the sacrifices they made. Because of them, I have been able to learn of Christ and come to know Him, and I owe everything to that. But most of all, I'm thankful for the sacrifice that Christ made for you and me. He, like Joseph and Hyrum, gave His life so that we could return to Heaven someday. And so much more. I am endlessly grateful for the gospel. Words could never describe the feelings I have for my Savior. But music can, which is why I recorded these songs for you... so that you too can feel closer to Heaven."
