Phil Wickham Shares His Favorite Lyrics and His Thoughts About "Battle Belongs"
Worship leader and songwriter Phil Wickham took the time to reflect on the recent success of his single "Battle Belongs." The song peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart and it also went on to peak at No. 13 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart. Wickham co-wrote the song with Bethel Music's Brian Johnson, and collaborated with Jonathan Smith in the production of the single.
The song is a powerful reminder that if we are in Jesus, we stand on the side of a battle that has already been won. Wickham shares how he was inspired to write the song. "In 2 Chronicles 20, one of my favorite stories in the Bible, a huge army has amassed to come against the people of God," Wickham explained. "Every time I sing 'Battle Belongs,' it pumps me up because we know that, in anything we might face, our God is bigger. I hope this song reminds people that he is with us and for us. If we stand firm and hold our position, we will see the salvation of the Lord on our behalf!"
After the song's success at radio and across churches, Wickham reflects. "It has been incredible to see what has happened with this special song since it was released last fall. Thankful and honored to be a part of songs like this that take on a life of their own and find their way into peoples stories and communities."
He goes on to share his favorite section of this popular worship anthem. "I think my favorite lyric from it is "When all I see is a cross, God You see an empty tomb"! We only see what's in front of us, but God sees the whole picture. He sees the end goal. He already has the victory planned out. He has good plans for us, to give us a "future and a hope". So we can trust, and hope, and sing, and live in a place of joy. Not because life is easy, but because we know God is with us, for us, and working things together for our good."
Other artists agree. Christine D'Clario shares, "Every line in this song has such a deep meaning to me. Thank you for penning the cry of the saints' heart in such a time as this." Meanwhile, Hillsong Worship's Brooke Ligertwood believes the song is "a great confession."
